Seven common sentence mining mistakes and how to avoid them

Sentence mining is simple to understand and easy to do badly. Almost everyone who quits trips over the same things during the first month. Knowing them in advance saves a lot of frustration.
1. Saving everything you do not understand
At first everything seems worth saving. Two weeks later you have four hundred cards and an hour of reviews a day. Set a limit of sentences per episode and stick to it. Important words come back.
2. Cards that are too hard
A sentence with four unknowns is not learned, it is endured. If you still cannot find a way into a card when reviewing it, the problem is not your memory: the sentence was above your level. Delete it and wait to meet that word in a simpler one.
3. Reviewing a lot and watching little
Cards are the side dish, not the main course. If all your language time goes into reviewing, you are missing the listening hours that build fluency. A reasonable share is to spend between a fifth and a quarter of your total time on reviews.
4. Fooling yourself when answering
Pressing “Good” because “it sort of rang a bell” seems harmless, but the algorithm will push that card away and next time you will have forgotten it completely. If you hesitated, it is “Again”. This is not an exam; nobody is grading you.
5. Memorising the card instead of the language
Sometimes you recognise a card by its first word or by the voice and “know” the answer without having understood the sentence. To avoid that, listen to the whole audio and think about what each part means before revealing the translation.
6. Always trusting machine translation
Machine translation does not know the scene. Irony, wordplay and idioms often come out wrong. Ten seconds spent checking the translation when you capture saves months of reviewing the wrong meaning.
7. Giving up after a bad week
Everybody misses a day now and then. The problem is not the break, but coming back to a mountain of pending reviews. When it happens, do not try to clear them all: do your normal daily goal, add no new cards for a few days and let the system rebalance.
The method works over the long run and forgives stumbles. The only thing it does not forgive is stopping altogether.
