Keeping the habit: ten minutes a day you will actually do
Published on · Leer esta guía en español
Learning a language is a project of months and years. Over that span, what makes the difference is not the week you studied three hours a day, but how many days in a row you kept up a minimum. A small habit you keep beats an ambitious plan you abandon.
Start with a ridiculously easy goal
Set a goal you can meet on your worst day: tired, rushed and unmotivated. For most people that is ten to twenty reviews, about five or ten minutes.
On good days you will do more, and that is fine. But the goal defines the minimum, not the ideal. Set it high and every day you fall short counts as a failure, and failures in a row are the prelude to quitting.
How many new cards to add
Every new card generates several reviews over the following weeks. Add twenty a day and within a month your sessions last an hour. A sensible guide:
- If you are short on time: three to five new sentences a day.
- For a comfortable pace: five to ten.
- More than fifteen only if you really have half an hour a day to review.
If pending reviews start to weigh on you, stop adding cards for a few days and only review. The deck settles quickly.
Anchor reviews to something you already do
Habits stick better to existing routines than to clock times. “After coffee”, “on the bus” or “before the next episode” work better than “at seven”.
Reviewing right before you watch something has an extra benefit: you arrive at the show with the language already switched on.
Streaks help, until they do not
Seeing a count of consecutive days is motivating, which is why many apps include one. Use it as a nudge, not a judge. If the streak breaks one day, the only thing that matters is not breaking it two days running.
After a long absence, do not try to catch up all at once. Do your normal goal each day and let the backlog be absorbed.
How Galigo supports it
In Galigo you have a daily review goal, see your streak and the day’s progress on the home screen, and, if you like competing, you can join a weekly league with other learners. All of it is optional: the essential part is still opening the app and reviewing for a few minutes.
